Regency Zarafa
A female giraffe was given to the King of France in 1826 by the Egyptian ruler. She arrived in Marseilles and walked to Paris. That next season Toiles de Jouy were printed with her image. Spotted coordinate....animal skin prints were popular after Napoleon brought back exotic hides following his tour of North Africa (1801). However they were used mainly for carpets, becoming a clothing motif in the 20th century.

Printed Stripe...with Giraffe being lead. that portion is 6 1/4", smaller floral portion 3 5/8th". Giraffe...ear to hoof is 5". This is a large pattern and only a portion shows in the image - click on picture for a larger view of this delicate print. Actual fabric size in the large view is 13" x 8.5"
