Discover the Timeless Elegance of Toile!
Step into history with our three exquisite new Toile fabric lines: Summer House, Trendy Toile, and Toile de Jouy.
Toile, a classic printed cotton, became synonymous with intricate scenic designs after its origins in 18th-century Europe. First developed near Dublin in the 1750s by Francis Nixon, this printing technique was perfected in France during the 1760s, notably at the famous Oberkampf factory in Jouy-en-Josas.
Toile designs typically feature three distinct themes: pastoral scenes with people and buildings, monochromatic florals, and graceful birds. While briefly worn as dresses, these beautiful prints found their true place in home furnishings, from curtains to quilts.
Originally printed using large etched plates, early Toiles showcased grand-scale imagery. As technology evolved, the introduction of copper rollers compressed designs to fit the printing format, creating the intricate patterns we cherish today.
Classic Toile prints were made in a single color on a light background. Using finely ground mordants, these prints developed into rich hues of red, violet, pink, black, brown, or even blue and green when treated with indigo.
I’m always looking for Toiles! These new arrivals include a lovely Bird Toile, plus a complex stripe—both historically popular between 1840-1860 as dress goods and in quilts. Margo Introduces the new lines on her YouTube channel Cottonopia.

A Rich History
Chintz fabrics date back to the 16th century in India, traditionally created with block printing. Bucklebury Chintz captures this heritage with paisleys, calico prints, beautiful vines, and even a design inspired by the moiré technique.
