The Black Octagon Chintz Center Panel was reproduced from a quilt in the collection of the International Quilt Study Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) and used with permission (1997-007-0341). On the original quilt, which was probably made in the United Kingdom, circa 1820-1840, the Black Octagon is appliquéd onto a hexagon quilt that measures 98 x 93 inches. The only published picture that I have seen of this quilt is in Quilt Studies, The Journal of the British Quilt Study Group, Issue 11, 2010. The article is named From the United Kingdom to the United States: The Evolution of Chintz Appliqué Quilts by Carolyn Ducey.
The Black Octagon Chintz Center Panel is printed on sheeting and is colorfast. In trying to achieve an early 19th century look, I have learned several things about balance and color. Rather than today’s popular formula of “light, medium, and dark”, I am relying more on numerous “lights and mediums” with a good balance of scale and lots of neutrals. My favorite colors to use with the Black Octagon Chintz Center Panel are bronze, mushroom and chestnut. Choose your favorites from the lovely range of colors in the panel.
