Civil War Core Collection
Printed and woven fabric styles of the Civil War Period were foulards and plaids, plaids and more plaids. The height of Fashion in Paris c. 1855 would have been a large, colorful printed plaid garment. At the same time...the offerings at a General Store on the edge of the prairie would have been a yarn dyed small checks. The rage for plaids began with Queen Victoria and Albert remodeling Balmoral. They often wore tartans while visiting...thus setting the fashion for plaids.
Colorations were the trusted, stable red or blue prints and wovens. Fashion colorations...flat lavenders and lots of browns.
1850-1855 was the peak of American calico production for the 19th century. 10,000 different offerings annually.
