Paisley designs trace their origins to the elegant woven cashmere shawls of India, prized in Europe during the late 18th and early 19th centuries for their intricate boteh (pinecone) motifs and fine craftsmanship. As demand soared, British manufacturers sought ways to replicate these luxurious designs more efficiently.

In Paisley, Scotland, weavers worked to mechanize the complex motifs for high-end woven shawls. At the same time, printers began adapting the elaborate paisley patterns for cotton fabrics, making the fashionable design more accessible to a broader market. By printing the signature curved boteh shapes onto cottons, manufacturers could capture the look of costly cashmere in a more affordable and practical textile.

These printed cotton paisleys became immensely popular in the 19th century, blending global design influence with British industrial innovation — a perfect example of how fashion, technology, and trade shaped textile history.
