Core Collection Bundle (1865-1900)
1865 - 1900 Core Collection
The last decade of the 19th Century was a time of immense change for the textile business in America. Textiles of the post-Civil War period featured a wide variety of large and small designs, mill engravings, paisleys, stripes, and polychrome florals in a broad palette of warm colors: cream, tan, mocha, chocolate, rusts, pinks and greens.
Artificial alizarin, the coloring agent in madder dye, was discovered in 1869. The 1870-80s became known as the "madder decades" because of the numerous madder prints available for dressmaking and quilts.
In 1897 German chemists produced he first synthetic indigo dye, "Indigo Pure".
