Created with permission from The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles, this collection faithfully recreates fabrics inspired by the original Gooch Coverlet, an heirloom masterpiece made between 1800–1820 by the Gooch sisters of Suffolk, England. The original coverlet remains an exceptional example of mosaic patchwork and intricate inlaid patchwork techniques, requiring immense skill and patience to construct.
The Gooch family were farming gentry from Brundish Hall, Suffolk, and the sophistication of the fabrics and workmanship reflects a family of education, wealth, and artistic accomplishment. The original coverlet measures an impressive 295cm x 300cm and features a dramatic central floral medallion surrounded by carefully framed borders, figurative floral motifs, and delicate hexagon rosettes.
Judy Newman and Margaret Mew have beautifully revived these historic Georgian prints and rich period colors for modern quilters while preserving the spirit and elegance of the original textile.
