Picotage is an 18th-century fabric printing technique used to add delicate dotted details to a design. After the main motif was printed with a carved wood block, tiny pin-like points were tapped or impressed into the fabric to create fine highlights, shading, or decorative outlines.

This subtle dotting added depth and refinement to florals, leaves, and trailing vines, giving printed cottons a lively, hand-finished character. Picotage is one of the small but beautiful details that make early wood-block printed textiles so distinctive and historically rich.
