Dear Reproduction Fabrics Friends,
We are excited to announce two stunning new fabric collections arriving this summer from Judy Newman and Margaret Mew for Devonstone Collection — The Gooch Coverlet and Darling Buds of May.
These beautiful new lines are part of the Festival of Quilts program taking place at the end of July in the UK, one of the world’s largest and most inspiring quilt events celebrating quilting, textile history, and design.
Both collections are now available for preorder, and we think reproduction fabric lovers, history enthusiasts, and vintage quilt admirers are going to absolutely fall in love with them.
THE GOOCH COVERLET (1775-1825)
Inspired by one of the most extraordinary surviving British quilts of the early nineteenth century, The Gooch Coverlet collection recreates the elegant Georgian printed cottons found in the original heirloom made by the Gooch sisters of Suffolk, England between 1800–1820.
Created with permission from The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles, this remarkable collection captures the beauty of the original coverlet’s mosaic patchwork, inlaid piecing, florals, geometrics, stripes, and delicate period prints.

The original Gooch Coverlet is an impressive and meticulously constructed printed cottons coverlet made using the unusual and highly skilled inlaid patchwork method. The quilt features a dramatic frame layout with a large floral center surrounded by floral frames and intricate hexagon rosettes.
The level of skill required to produce this quilt was incredibly high. The maker had to carefully cut exact motifs from the backing fabric, place them precisely into matching cutout shapes, and hand sew them from the reverse side using tiny seam allowances. This highly specialized technique required patience, precision, and extraordinary needlework skills.
The quality of the fabrics and workmanship reflects the status of the Gooch family, who were farming gentry from Brundish Hall in Suffolk and owners of several large farms and properties. It is believed that several Gooch sisters worked together on the coverlet, creating not only a masterpiece of quiltmaking but also a treasured family heirloom passed down through generations.
Judy Newman and Margaret Mew have beautifully revived these historic Georgian prints and rich period colors for modern quilters while preserving the spirit and elegance of the original textile. We will have yardage of this new line available later this Spring but we are accepting pre-orders for the complete quilt top kits and collection bundles now on our website.
DARLING BUDS OF MAY (1825-1865)
Soft florals, cheerful pastels, cottage-inspired prints, and vintage charm fill this beautiful new collection by Judy Newman.
Inspired by Shakespeare’s famous line, “Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,” this collection celebrates the joy of quilting through every season with delicate florals, graceful stripes, sweet geometrics, and lovely vintage-inspired color palettes.
Both collections are expected to arrive in July and will ship when available. We will also have coordinating yardage from both lines available closer to release.
These collections beautifully combine antique quilt inspiration with the timeless pleasure of stitching and collecting historic-style fabrics. We are thrilled to be able to offer them in the shop and especially excited that they are being featured as part of this year’s Festival of Quilts celebrations in the UK.
Thank you for supporting our small business and for sharing our love of historic textiles and quilting traditions.
Warmly,
Margo
