Margo's Antique Fabric Sample Books
|
Starting in January 2020, I will be offering a monthly online magazine containing approximately 15 scans (each month) of samples in one of my antique fabric sample books. The 2020 offering will focus on the book titled "Laines 1849" The spine says "Fleurs, Persans, Geometriques, Rayures".
Along with the visuals there will be Textile History essays focusing on print and dye technology developments, fashion, geopolitics and the global marketplace or popular culture. A bibliography will be included with each issue.
I know the essays may sound a bit stuffy but here are two examples.
The first hydrogen-filled balloons sailed above the French countryside in 1784, a few months later a printing of "Toiles de Jouy" featured those balloons. A good example of popular culture transferring to textile design late 18th Century.
Geo political influence affected the silk ribbon trade in the North American. After the French Revolution silk ribbon merchants in France were caught with warehouses full of silk ribbons that had lost their value due to new regulations against ‘luxury dress’. Silk ribbons had been available to North American Indian tribes since the mid-18th century through trade and as gifts. After the French Revolution there were more, lots more, silk ribbons in North America especially from French merchants and traders.
There will be a private Instagram account for asking questions and sharing pictures. First issue will post about the middle of January.
