Here are Mary Koval's comments--"Brown fabrics were especailly popular in the 1870s. A favorite nickname for these fabrics was "Chocolates". They were dyed using natural sources such as Walnut Hulls, clay, onions skins and woodchips. "Chocolate" fabrics were made for clothing which could be worn many times without washing since it would not show the dirt. These fabrics also work well with Double pinks and shirtings."
